A tattoo can be removed using lasers. The basic mechanism of action is that the ink particles of the tattoo are broken down by the laser. The body than absorbs the broken down ink thus imitating the natural fading that time or sun exposure would create.
There is a specific light spectrum for all tattoo pigments. For an effective treatment a tattoo laser must be capable of emitting adequate energy within the given absorption spectrum of the pigment. However, there are some tattoo pigments that are more challenging particularly yellows, greens and fluorescent inks as their absorption spectra fall outside or on the edge of the emission spectra available in the tattoo removal laser. Titanium Dioxide which is highly reflective is found in high concentrations in the pastel coloured inks that are recently being used. A significant amount of incident light energy is reflected from such inks and hence it is difficult to remove.
