Earlier techniques used for hair transplantation were not up to the mark and left the patients unsatisfied with the treatment. The result from such treatments was that the patients even though were no longer bald but the hair line looked unnatural.
However, with the introduction of new advanced techniques the scenario has changed and fortunately for better. The results are fantastic but the procedure takes a long time, sometimes the whole day. A group of one to four hair called as a follicular unit has its own nerve and blood supply. It was determined that the transplanted hair survived well if these follicular units were kept intact. The very reason behind the older techniques of hair transplant failing was that these follicular units were not kept intact and they broke.
The areas like back or sides of the scalp which resist pattern baldness are the ones from which the follicular units need to be harvested. Proper care needs to be taken for the same so that the harvested area does not look disturbed and ugly. Though the process is long and difficult it is considered to be worth the same because the results are fabulous.
The procedure is safer and the patient is administered with local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia which means the patient can suggest and direct the placement of the follicular units if the hairline needs to be changed.
